Get your sequined spandex and fish nets ready–the Mermaid Parade is this Saturday! This year marks the 25th anniverasry of this annual Coney Island aquatic-freak-show-parade and according to organizers they're here to dispel rumors that it's the end of Coney Island. The official website states, "Coney Island is not closing down and the Mermaid Parade will be celebrate its 50th, 75th and 100th anniversaries!"
Well good. Nothing says Brooklyn summer like a parade of drunken merfolk marching (waddling) alongside a beach scattered with Nathan's trash and heroin needles. So here's to another 100 years of heat stroke, Cyclone whiplash and tetanus!
